NeoGeo Pocket
The SNK Neo Geo Pocket (and its color successor, the Neo Geo Pocket Color), released in 1998-1999, brought SNK's legendary fighting game heritage to handheld gaming. Despite its late entry into the market dominated by Nintendo's Game Boy, the NGPC offered an exceptional gaming experience with its responsive microswitched "clicky" joystick—widely considered the best D-pad ever made for a handheld. The system excelled at fighting games: SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium and The Last Blade delivered console-quality fighting action, while unique titles like Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure showcased third-party support. The NGPC's 16-bit graphics were vibrant and well-designed, with games featuring distinctive anime-influenced art styles. Unfortunately, SNK's financial troubles led to the system's discontinuation in 2001 after selling around 2 million units. The Neo Geo Pocket Color remains beloved by collectors for its build quality, exceptional game library, and that unforgettable joystick.
